Important Tips for New Casino Players Who Like to Try Poker

Learn the hand rankings, play fewer hands than you think, and play more of them from late position. Start at low stakes with at least 20 buy-ins in reserve. Casino poker against the dealer, such as Caribbean Stud or Three Card Poker, is a different game with a fixed house edge.

Position

Acting last lets you see what everyone else does first. Play only strong hands from early seats (pairs from 9s up, A-K, A-Q), and widen your range on the button and in the cut-off. Most winning players make most of their money from late position.

Low stakes and bankroll

Start at the lowest cash games or small tournaments. Keep at least 20 buy-ins for your cash game stake: at ₱1,000 buy-ins, that is ₱20,000. Drop a level if you fall below it.

Beginner mistakes

  • Playing too many starting hands.
  • Calling too much and folding too rarely.
  • Bluffing players who never fold at low stakes.
  • Playing on tilt after a bad beat.

Poker against the casino

Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud and Casino Hold'em are played against the dealer, not other players, so the house edge is fixed. In Three Card Poker, play any hand of queen-six-four or better and fold the rest; skip the bonus side bets with high edges. More in card game tips.

Responsible gaming

Play only if you are 21+ and it stays fun

These rules apply on every page of this site. A young casino has less history to judge it by, so the limits matter more.

21+ only

Adults only, everywhere

You must be 21 or older, and older in some countries. A casino can ask for ID before your first withdrawal, and new casinos often do.
