DGOJ Spain

Online casinos in Spain have been regulated since 2011 by the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling, the DGOJ. New online casinos in Spain need to have one of two licenses to operate. The first is a general license, the second is a special license.

The organization is responsible for monitoring and inspecting gambling practices, processing license applications, and managing fees. They also offer a dispute resolution service for customers who have had issues with any licensed operator.

It is important to note that the DGOJ does not regulate lotteries, which are operated and controlled separately.

DGOJ Licensing Scope

The general license allows the casino to offer betting and other gambling activities such as competitions in Spain. These are issued for a period of 10 years, but then there is the option for the casino to have this extended for a further 10 year period.

The special license means that the casino can offer all the regulated games that are covered by the general license. The casino has to have a general license in order to get a special license, and it can be issued for between one and five years. After this, extensions are possible if required.

To obtain the relevant licenses from the DGOJ, a casino may have to wait for up to six months. This will give a provisional license, and then it can take a further four months for the final license to be granted.

Qualification Requirements

For licenses to be granted, the casinos have to meet specific criteria. There are a number of legal and financial requirements for them to qualify. There are also some technical specifications, such as the professional experience of those who are running the casino and the overall staffing structure of the organization. The casino will be required to provide evidence that they meet the requirements of the DGOJ when they consider the license application.

The DGOJ also conducts inquiries into operators that do not have a license and will take some enforcement action if necessary where companies are operating outside the law. In addition, when operating in Spain, every online casino will need to pay fees to the DGOJ. There are different levels of payments, and these range from €2,500 to €38,000.

How to know if a New Online Casino is DGOJ-licensed?

To find out if a new online casino in Spain has a DGOJ license, you can check on the official website of the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling. There is a link there entitled ‘Licensed Operators.’ This will give you a list of all the casino operators that are able to operate legally in Spain. However, it is also a requirement for the casinos to add four logos to their website. These are the logos that represent the prohibition regulations relating to underage players, the responsible gambling logo, and the safe website logo.

If there are any issues with any casino operator, then customers can go to the complaints section of the DGOJ and complete their online form. The organization will then follow its own process for helping to resolve the issue.
